Mild panic spread across parts of Assam after a 4.2 magnitude earthquake struck the region on Tuesday morning. While no casualties or property damage have been reported so far, the tremors caused fear among residents, many of whom rushed out of their homes in alarm.
According to a report by the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake was recorded at around 9:22 AM in Manja, Assam. The tremor measured 4.2 on the Richter scale. Fortunately, there are no reports of injuries or structural damage. Assam had previously experienced an earthquake earlier this year in February, with a magnitude of 5.0. During that event, tremors were felt in Guwahati, Nagaon, and Tezpur areas.
Nepal And Pakistan Have Also Shaken Recently
This recent quake in Assam follows seismic activity in neighboring countries. On June 30, Nepal experienced a 3.9 magnitude quake that prompted people to evacuate their homes. Similarly, on June 29, Pakistan was struck by a 5.3 magnitude earthquake in the early hours around 3:54 AM.
India’s Earthquake History
India has a long history of damaging earthquakes. The 2001 Bhuj earthquake in Gujarat resulted in significant loss of life and property. The devastating 2005 quake in Kashmir and the 2011 Sikkim earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 also caused widespread destruction. Manipur has also been severely affected by past seismic activity.
Although no damage has been reported in the latest Assam quake, experts advise continued preparedness in earthquake-prone regions.
