Three Terrorists Eliminated in Operation Mahadev on Srinagar’s Outskirts
In a significant counter-terrorism success, security forces neutralised three terrorists in an encounter near Lidwas, on the outskirts of Srinagar. The operation, codenamed Operation Mahadev, was launched based on specific intelligence inputs. The Indian Army’s Chinar Corps confirmed the development, stating that an “intense firefight” had taken place and that the terrorists were killed in the exchange.
The operation was a coordinated effort by the Indian Army, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and the Jammu and Kashmir Police. The gunfight erupted in the Mulnar area of Harwan after forces launched a search operation to locate the suspects. As per official updates, the operation remains active, with additional reinforcements deployed and a combing operation underway to ensure no threats remain in the area.
The presence of militants in such close proximity to Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, has raised alarm among security agencies, especially in light of the upcoming Amarnath Yatra. Senior officials have indicated that surveillance has been significantly increased around Srinagar and adjoining areas.
Encounter Erupts in Kishtwar as Terrorists Engage Security Forces
Meanwhile, another fierce encounter has broken out in the Chatroo area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district. At least three heavily armed terrorists are believed to be cornered by security forces in this hilly region. The firefight started when a joint team of the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police launched a combing operation following credible intelligence regarding the presence of terrorists.
A senior Army officer confirmed that contact had been established and described the situation as a “fierce gun battle” ongoing in the dense forests of Chatroo. The rugged mountainous terrain and forest cover make operations in the region particularly challenging. Terrorists in this area are known to be highly trained in guerrilla and jungle warfare tactics.
This operation follows a similar encounter in May this year, where one soldier was martyred during an anti-terror mission in the same region. The resurgence of militant activity in Kishtwar, which had remained largely peaceful for several years, has become a major concern for security agencies. Intelligence officials believe that these groups are not only well-trained but also have support networks in the region.
Kishtwar: The New Hotbed of Terror Activity in Jammu Province
Once known for its calm, Kishtwar has seen a troubling increase in terrorist activities over the past couple of years. Officials have noted that the region is now emerging as a key transit and operational zone for terrorist groups. Its geographical location, dense forests, and difficult terrain make it an ideal hiding place for militants attempting to infiltrate deeper into Jammu and Kashmir or carry out coordinated strikes.
Security forces believe that these terrorists are part of larger groups operating under the guidance of handlers from across the border. Intelligence sources have linked recent attacks in Kishtwar to networks based in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
With multiple operations being carried out in the area over the past year, Kishtwar has transitioned into one of the most sensitive zones in the Jammu division. High-tech surveillance systems and drone monitoring are now being utilised more frequently to track movement in the region.
Heightened Security Ahead of Amarnath Yatra
These encounters come just a day before the annual Amarnath Yatra is set to commence, placing security forces on heightened alert across the Union Territory. In response to the elevated threat levels, over 600 additional companies of paramilitary forces have been mobilised to secure the pilgrimage routes.
This year, the administration has declared the entire Yatra route—both from Pahalgam and Baltal—as a no-fly zone. As a result, helicopter services to the cave shrine have been suspended. The move is aimed at ensuring tight aerial security and preventing any airborne threats.
Yatris have been asked to strictly follow official advisories and to travel only in designated security convoys. These convoys are equipped with advanced security and medical support systems, ensuring safe passage for thousands of devotees participating in the annual pilgrimage.
A Message of Resolve
The recent encounters underscore the Indian security forces’ unwavering resolve in combating terrorism across Jammu and Kashmir. While challenges remain, coordinated operations and intelligence-driven missions continue to keep militant activity in check. As the region braces for one of its most sensitive periods with the onset of the Yatra, authorities remain vigilant and prepared.
