Acclaimed Indian folk singer and playback artist Kalpana Patowary is set to release her latest project, ‘Gangasnan’, a mesmerizing fusion of Bhojpuri folk traditions and contemporary jazz influences. This innovative tribute to India’s rich musical and cultural heritage will be unveiled at the Mahakumbh 2025.

‘Gangasnan’ is a poignant ode to the sacred Ganges River, revered in Hinduism for its purifying and healing powers. The song explores the ritual of Ganga Snan, a spiritual cleansing performed in the Ganges to achieve salvation, symbolizing the cycle of life, death, and rebirth. Patowary’s powerful vocals weave a narrative that connects the ancient beliefs of the river’s transformative power with modern musical expressions.

The song is a collaborative effort with Indian jazz pianist Louiz Banks, who has infused the track with his signature synth fillers and dynamic drum solos. The arrangement also features sarangi by Dilshad Khan, rock guitar by Kush Upadhyay, French horns, and a choir. The up-tempo finale showcases Louis Banks’ piano improvisation complementing Patowary’s vocals, backed by Sheldon D’Silva’s bass.

The musical journey, shot in the cultural hubs of Kashi and Prayagraj, is directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Samujjal Kashyap. The project features notable artists such as Santi from Spain and Surush Sacha from Denmark, as well as the late Ramagya Ram, a legendary 115-year-old folk artist from Bihar.

Written by Arunav Deka, composed by Bhikhari Thakur and Louis Banks, ‘Gangasnan’ is a groundbreaking effort in preserving the cultural legacy of Bhikhari Thakur, the iconic figure of Bhojpuri literature. This innovative project is set to bring global attention to the evolving soundscape of Indian folk music.

With ‘Gangasnan’, Kalpana Patowary continues her pioneering journey in preserving India’s rich musical and cultural heritage. This soul-stirring tribute is a must-listen for music enthusiasts and those who appreciate India’s diverse cultural traditions.
