Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau named the next Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc following Chrystia Freeland’s abrupt resignation. The Canadian Government was in chaos after Freeland’s surprise resignation, which was revealed in a damning letter, accusing the government of mismanaging its preparations for Donald Trump’s return to the White House.
In a ceremony held in Ottawa late in the afternoon, LeBlanc, 57, was sworn in. Since Trudeau took office in 2015, LeBlanc, a strong supporter of Trudeau, has served in a number of important cabinet roles. He oversaw border security as Canada’s Public Safety Minister until recently, especially after Trump threatened to impose 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico. He was also a member of Trudeau’s team when the prime leader visited Trump at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida last month.
“We understand that the cost of living for a huge, huge number of Canadians is a very significant issue. We need to also be extremely focused on the challenges that the incoming American administration will pose with respect to the potential imposition of tariffs,” LeBlanc said.
The Canadian capital is in chaos and bewilderment following Freeland’s resignation, which she made public in a social media post just after nine in the morning. In the afternoon, she was supposed to provide an update on the budgetary and economic status of the government.
