US President-elect Donald Trump has sparked controversy by expressing support for the H-1B visa program, which allows highly skilled foreign workers to enter the United States. In an interview with the New York Post, Trump stated, “I’ve always liked the (H-1B) visas. I have always been in favor of the visas, that’s why we have them”.

This move has placed Trump at the center of a heated debate among his supporters and tech leaders. On one side are traditional anti-immigration Trump loyalists, while on the other are prominent Silicon Valley leaders like Elon Musk, who advocate for the visas as essential for maintaining America’s technological edge.

Musk, a vocal proponent of the program, emphasized the importance of attracting top talent to the US. “There is a permanent shortage of excellent engineering talent. It is the fundamental limiting factor in Silicon Valley,” Musk wrote on his social media platform.

The controversy erupted after Trump appointed Indian-origin tech executive Sriram Krishnan as his artificial intelligence adviser. Right-wing influencer Laura Loomer criticized the move, calling it “not America First policy.” This sparked a broader division within the Republican Party, with some conservative Republicans, including former GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley, supporting Loomer’s stance.

The debate highlights a deeper divide within the Republican Party on immigration policy. Trump’s renewed openness to H-1B visas signals a potential shift in his stance, which has drawn criticism from hardliners and MAGA supporters who view it as a betrayal of Trump’s ‘America First’ agenda.

The H-1B visa program has been a contentious topic, with tech giants using it to hire engineers from nations like India and China. During his first term, Trump restricted the program, citing concerns it could undercut American workers. However, the US Department of Homeland Security has introduced new regulations to modernize the H-1B program, set to take effect on January 17, 2025, just days before Trump takes office.

As the debate continues, Musk has aggressively responded to H1-B critics online, warning of a “MAGA civil war” and stating, “I will go to war on this issue the likes of which you cannot possibly comprehend”. The outcome of this controversy will likely have significant implications for the US tech industry and immigration policy under Trump’s leadership.
