In a surprising turn of events, President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia praised President Donald Trump on the occasion of his second inauguration, commending him for demonstrating “courage” during his campaign and achieving a “convincing victory” in the election. However, shortly after, Trump delivered some of his most pointed criticisms of Putin to date, stating that the Russian leader is “destroying Russia” through his ongoing military actions in Ukraine.

During a press briefing in the Oval Office, Trump remarked, “He can’t be thrilled, he’s not doing so well,” in reference to Putin’s struggles in the war. He added, “Russia is bigger, they have more soldiers to lose, but that’s no way to run a country.” This stark contrast in rhetoric highlights the unpredictable nature of U.S.-Russia relations, particularly under Trump’s leadership.

Despite the critical comments, Trump indicated that he might engage in discussions with Putin “very soon.” Following Trump’s remarks, Yuri Ushakov, Putin’s foreign policy adviser, acknowledged the U.S. president’s statements but emphasized that Russia is awaiting further communication from Trump’s team regarding potential negotiations. “We are ready and open for dialogue with the new U.S. administration on the Ukraine conflict,” Ushakov stated, expressing hope for constructive talks.

Trump had previously vowed to bring an end to the war in Ukraine even before taking office. When asked about the timeline for halting the conflict, he reiterated the need to consult with Putin, saying, “I have to speak to President Putin. We’re going to have to find out.”

Putin has expressed a keen interest in re-establishing direct communication with the U.S. president. On the same day, he welcomed Trump’s willingness to restore ties, signaling a desire for dialogue. However, the Russian leader is also strengthening his alliances with other nations.

Recently, he hosted Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in the Kremlin, where they signed a treaty to enhance military and economic cooperation. Additionally, Putin held a video call with Chinese President Xi Jinping, during which they discussed collaboration to navigate global uncertainties and defend the international system centered around the United Nations.

Ushakov revealed that Xi had briefed Putin on his recent conversation with Trump, indicating a mutual interest in building relations with the U.S. on a foundation of respect and mutual benefit, contingent on reciprocal interest from Trump’s administration.

On the ground in Ukraine, Russian military operations continue, albeit at a significant cost. Western officials estimate that Russian forces are suffering over 1,000 casualties daily. Trump noted this high toll as a potential leverage point for negotiating an end to the conflict, stating, “He’s grinding it out, but most people thought that war would have been over in about one week. I think he’d be very well off to end that war.”

Trump has indicated a willingness to meet with Putin “very quickly” following his inauguration, a meeting that would represent a significant diplomatic milestone for the Russian leader, especially after years of isolation from Western powers.

As discussions of potential talks loom, Putin is positioning himself as a formidable negotiator, confident in Russia’s ability to endure the ongoing conflict despite the economic sanctions that have strained the nation’s economy. He reiterated his commitment to achieving a “long-term peace” rather than a temporary cease-fire, asserting that he will “fight for Russia’s interests.”

The Kremlin has outlined these interests to include guarantees that Ukraine will not join NATO and restrictions on Western influence in Eastern Europe. Furthermore, Putin has made it clear that he intends to retain all territories captured by Russia during the conflict.

As the situation evolves, the international community watches closely, aware that the dynamics between Trump and Putin could significantly impact the future of U.S.-Russia relations and the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.
