US President-elect Donald Trump has said that he may use “economic force” to unite Canada with the United States amid continuous political unrest in Canada that resulted in Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announcing his resignation. The idea of Canada becoming the “51st” state in the US has been mentioned by Trump.
Trump again suggested the merger of the two nations during a news conference held at his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida on Tuesday. He requested Canada to remove artificially drawn lines, and take decisions in interest for national security.”
Using “economic force” to unite the United States and Canada is another concept he has put out. Based on the news reporting. Trump used the US military aid and trade deficits between the two countries to support his recommendations.
“Canada and the United States that would really be something. We’ve been good neighbours, but we can’t do it forever,” he quoted.
Trump has made it plain that the US will bear less of the financial burden. According to him, the United States “basically protects” Canada. He added that though he has love for Canadians and has a lot of pals up there, the annual cost of protecting it is in the hundreds of billions.
Every year, the US spends hundreds of billions to care for Canada and thus suffers from trade deficits,” He used the occasion to emphasize his intention to impose “substantial” tariffs to goods coming from Mexico and Canada.
Additionally, speaking on the security front, he laid stress that the US even helps in the military aid for Canada, as Canada has a small one and totally relies on US support.
Hours after this, he shared a map of the US on a social media post on Truth Social, depicting Canada as part of the United States. “Oh Canada,” he captioned it.
Strongly reacting, Canadian PM Justin Trudeau dismissed the suggestion, and said “There isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that Canada would become part of the United States. Workers and communities in both our countries benefit from being each other’s biggest trading and security partners.”
