A devastating explosion ripped through an explosives factory in northwestern Turkey, leaving 12 people dead and four others injured. The blast occurred at 8:25 am local time in the Karesi district of Balikesir province, causing widespread destruction and chaos.
Local governor Ismail Ustaoglu confirmed the casualties, saying, “Twelve employees lost their lives, and four others were hospitalized with injuries.” He extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to those who were injured.
The injured individuals are reportedly in stable condition, and there were no staff members left inside the factory when the blast occurred. The fire has been extinguished, and authorities have launched a thorough investigation into the incident.
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya stated that the cause of the explosion is still unknown, saying, “We are working to determine the cause of the blast.” Local officials suspect “technical reasons” may have contributed to the disaster, but no further details have been released.
The explosives plant, located in the north of Balikesir, produces munitions, explosives, and flares for both domestic and international markets. Witnesses described the scene as “like a battlefield,” with debris and shattered glass scattered everywhere.
Security forces have taken precautions to prevent a potential second blast, and civilians and media personnel have been barred from the area. The incident has raised concerns about the safety and security of Turkey’s defense industry, which has become a significant player in the global market, particularly in the production of drones.
