Turkey has rejected US President-elect Donald Trump’s claim that Ankara orchestrated an “unfriendly takeover” in Syria. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan dismissed Trump’s assertion, stating that it would be a “grave mistake” to characterize the situation in Syria as a Turkish takeover.

Fidan emphasized that the Syrian people are taking control of their own destiny, and Turkey’s role is one of support, not domination. He also cautioned against any attempt to impose control over Syria, citing the devastating consequences of such actions in the region.

Trump had previously stated that Turkey’s involvement in Syria was an “unfriendly takeover” that occurred without significant loss of life. However, Fidan countered that Turkey’s actions in Syria are aimed at supporting the Syrian people, rather than pursuing a takeover.

The Turkish foreign minister also addressed the issue of Kurdish forces in Syria, which Ankara views as “terrorists.” Fidan warned Syria’s new rulers to address this issue, stating that Turkey would intervene if necessary.
