President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance get ready for their swearing-in ceremony as Inauguration Day draws near. Donald Trump extended an invitation to Chinese President Xi Jinping to attend his inauguration, reported sources.

As Trump threatens new taxes on the second-largest economy in the world, the invitation might be an attempt to charm his Chinese counterpart. It’s still unclear, though, if the Chinese president has agreed. The Chinese embassy in Washington has not yet responded to a request for comment.

According to Trump, he and Xi “got along very well” and “had communication as recently as this week.” It should be noted that inviting foreign leaders to the inaugural ceremony would be a first for the United States. No foreign leaders have participated in a transfer-of-power ceremony since 1874, according to State Department records
