West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has welcomed the death sentence handed down to the accused in the Joynagar rape murder case, describing the judgement as precedented. Banerjee expressed her satisfaction with the swift delivery of justice in the case.
The incident of the 4th-grade student who went missing on October 4th while returning from tuition classes. whose body was discovered the next day near a police outpost in Kultali, sparking public outrage, occurred less than two months after the rape and murder of postgraduate trainee Doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical hospital. This is a case currently under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation after the Trinamool Congress government failed.

Mamata Banerjee on her Twitter handle posted that “the accused in the case involving the brutal rape and murder of a minor girl in Joynagar on 4th October 2024 has been sentenced to death today by the POSCO at Baruipur just within 62 days of the ghastly incident. Conviction and capital punishment in such a case in just two months is unprecedented in the history of the state. I congratulate the state police and all those involved in the prosecution process for this outstanding achievement.

The government has zero tolerance towards offenses against women and will continue to ensure that justice is neither delayed nor denied.” The court’s decision to award the death penalty to the accused has been seen as a significant step toward ensuring justice for the victim and her family. This development is likely to be seen as a positive step by people of West Bengal who have been demanding stricter laws and swifter justice for crimes against women.
