China has been urged by the World Health Organization (WHO) to exchange data and make information accessible that may help identify the cause of COVID-19.

The international health organization stressed that it is both “moral and scientific imperative” to comprehend the virus’s origins. It emphasized how crucial international collaboration, sharing, and transparency are to averting pandemics in the future.

The request was made precisely five years after Wuhan health authorities’ public statement about “viral pneumonia” cases was brought to the attention of the WHO’s national office in China. Since then, the pandemic has killed over seven million people worldwide and severely disrupted the economy.

The WHO called for acknowledgement for people afflicted by the virus and Long Covid, pointing out the profound changes and losses experienced globally as a result of COVID-19.

The WHO described how, on December 31, 2019, its China-based country office received a media release from Wuhan’s health authorities regarding “viral pneumonia” cases in the city.

“In the weeks, months, and years that unfolded after that, Covid-19 came to shape our lives and our world,” the World Health Organization stated.

“As we mark this milestone, let’s take a moment to honor the lives changed and lost, recognize those who are suffering from Covid-19 and Long Covid, express gratitude to the health workers who sacrificed so much to care for us, and commit to learning from Covid-19 to build a healthier tomorrow.”
