On Wednesday Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to the United Kingdom for its unwavering support in the face of ongoing Russian aggression.

The meeting with UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, David Lammy, highlighted the deepening partnership between Ukraine and the UK, focusing on defense, sanctions, and long-term cooperation.

President Zelenskyy acknowledged the extensive assistance provided by the UK since the onset of the full-scale invasion by Russia. He specifically thanked Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the UK government, and the British people for their steadfast commitment to supporting Ukraine during these challenging times.

“I met with UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy. I am grateful to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the UK government, and the British people for their steadfast support of Ukraine,” Zelenskyy stated.

The discussions centered on several critical areas, including enhancing the capabilities of Ukrainian forces on the front lines, intensifying sanctions against Russia, and securing reliable security guarantees for Ukraine.

Zelenskyy welcomed the UK’s recent decision to allocate £2 billion specifically aimed at bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities, an agreement that was ratified by the Ukrainian parliament just a day prior to the meeting.

The President emphasized the importance of this financial assistance, particularly for the development of Ukraine’s defense production, which he described as essential for strengthening the nation’s position in pursuit of a just and lasting peace.

“This support is crucial for our defense production and will significantly enhance our capabilities,” he noted. The meeting also addressed the implementation of the One Hundred Year Partnership Agreement, which aims to enhance cooperation between Ukraine and the UK across various sectors.

Lammy highlighted the significance of this agreement, stating, “It outlines our commitments to you not only for the period of this war, but also much further, based on our military, humanitarian, and economic cooperation for the benefit of our nations.”

Both leaders engaged in a detailed discussion regarding the coordination of efforts with international partners and the importance of security guarantees. They also focused on the need to intensify sanctions against Russia, particularly targeting its oil and defense industries.

The conversation included strategies for utilizing frozen Russian assets to benefit Ukraine, a move that could provide additional resources for the war-torn nation. David Lammy reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to supporting Ukraine, stating, “Our assessment is that Putin does not want to conduct any negotiations now.

Therefore, we continue to help you as much as we can as you fight this terrible war, and we encourage other partners to do the same.” This statement underscores the UK’s role as a key ally in Ukraine’s ongoing struggle against Russian aggression.

The meeting between Zelenskyy and Lammy reflects the growing collaboration between Ukraine and the UK, as both nations work together to address the challenges posed by the conflict.

The discussions not only focused on immediate military support but also laid the groundwork for long-term cooperation in various sectors, reinforcing the partnership between the two countries.

As the war continues, the commitment from the UK to support Ukraine remains strong, with both leaders expressing optimism about the future of their partnership.

The allocation of £2 billion for defense capabilities is a testament to the UK’s dedication to ensuring Ukraine’s sovereignty and security in the face of ongoing threats.

The meeting between President Zelenskyy and Foreign Secretary Lammy marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing collaboration between Ukraine and the UK. With a focus on strengthening defense capabilities, intensifying sanctions against Russia, and fostering long-term cooperation, both nations are poised to navigate the challenges ahead together.

The steadfast support from the UK serves as a crucial lifeline for Ukraine as it continues to fight for its sovereignty and peace in the region.
