The Hollywood awards season that precedes the Oscars began with the 2025 Golden Globes. Kieran Culkin and Zoe Saldana won the first acting honors of the evening on Sunday. Leading all the contenders, the Spanish-language picture entered the event just ahead of the three-and-a-half-hour post-World War II thriller “The Brutalist,” which has an intermission.
When Saldana accepted the Best Supporting Actress prize for her performance in the Spanish-language musical thriller “Emilia Perez,” she was clearly moved. She portrays a lawyer assisting a Mexican drug lord in changing his gender and beginning a new life in the movie. In her moving statement, Saldana thanked her director and co-stars, saying, “My heart is full of gratitude to the Golden Globes for celebrating our film,” while holding back tears.
Kieran Culkin earned the Best Supporting Actor award for his role in ‘A Real Pain’, a dramedy about cousins exploring their family history in Poland. In his acceptance speech. Culkin made a lighthearted thank you to his wife for “putting up with what you call my mania.” First-time host Nikki Glaser greeted the celebrity audience to “Ozempic’s biggest night” at the beginning of the event and made fun of Selena Gomez, Timothee Chalamet, Harrison Ford, and other influential people in the audience.
“All We Imagine As Light” by Payal Kapadia was beaten by “Emilia Perez” of France in the Best Motion Picture Non-English Language category of the Golden Globe Awards. Additionally nominated for Best Director, Kapadia lost out to Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist.”
Celebrities dazzled in black, gold, and silver gowns with a dash of red or periwinkle on the red carpet as they entered the event.
The 334 entertainment journalists from 85 countries that vote to choose Golden Globe winners have grown and changed in recent years in response to complaints about diversity and unethical behavior. The Academy Awards, on the other hand, are chosen by about 9,000 voters.
